Skin tumors

Skin surgery is a field of plastic surgery that encompasses a wide range of procedures to treat skin problems, including skin lesions, scars, skin tumors, congenital malformations, burns and aesthetic imperfections.

Skin surgery can play an important role in improving the appearance and quality of the skin, but it's important to understand that surgery alone does not guarantee beautiful, healthy skin.

Exeresis

Cutaneous tumor resection is a surgical procedure in which skin tumors are surgically removed from the skin. The procedure is performed for a variety of reasons, including to prevent the spread of disease, to obtain an accurate diagnosis, to relieve symptoms or for aesthetic reasons.

The following are typical steps in the excision of skin tumors:

  • Preparation: Before surgery, the patient is usually evaluated by a physician to determine the size, type and location of the skin tumour. Additional tests such as a biopsy may be performed to assess the nature of the tumor.
  • Anesthesia: During surgery, a local anesthetic is usually administered around the treatment area to numb the skin and minimize patient discomfort.
  • Surgical excision: The plastic surgeon uses a scalpel or bistoury to gently remove the skin tumour, taking care to include a margin of healthy tissue around the tumour to ensure that it is completely removed.
  • Wound closure: After excision of the skin tumor, the wound is usually closed with sutures to promote healing and minimize scarring. Precise suturing techniques can be used to minimize visible scarring.
  • Post-operative care: After surgery, specific post-operative care instructions are provided to the patient, including the application of antibiotic or healing ointments, as well as advice on preventing complications such as infection or hematoma.
