bruxism

Bruxism is a disorder characterized by involuntary and often unconscious grinding or clenching of the teeth. It can occur during the day (diurnal bruxism) or while sleeping (nocturnal bruxism), although nocturnal bruxism is more common.

Symptoms of bruxism can vary from person to person, but generally include:

  • Teeth grinding or clenching: People with bruxism may grind their teeth audibly or clench their teeth with excessive force.
  • Facial pain: Bruxism can cause pain in the jaw, temples, cheeks or facial muscles.
  • Tooth pain: Teeth grinding or clenching can lead to tooth sensitivity, premature wear of tooth enamel or tooth fractures.
  • Headaches: Bruxism can be associated with headaches, particularly on waking in the morning.
  • Sleep disorders: Some people with bruxism may have difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep.
