PHLEBOLOGY
Phlebology is a medical specialty that focuses on the study, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of venous diseases. It is particularly concerned with the venous system of the lower limbs, where venous disorders are most common.
What does phlebology treat?
Phlebology treats several types of venous pathologies, including :
- Varicose veins: Abnormal dilatations of the veins, often visible under the skin. They can cause pain, heaviness and swelling in the legs.
- Telangiectasias: Small red or bluish blood vessels visible on the surface of the skin (often called "spider veins").
- Chronic venous insufficiency: Dysfunction of venous valves, leading to poor blood circulation. Can cause heavy legs, swelling and even venous ulcers.
- Venous thrombosis: formation of clots in deep veins (phlebitis) or superficial veins.
- Aesthetic disorders: Treatment of visible veins for aesthetic reasons.
What treatments are available in phlebology?
Treatments depend on the pathology and its severity. Here are the most common:
- Sclerotherapy: Injection of a sclerosing agent into small veins or varicose veins to make them disappear.
- Laser or radiofrequency: Non-invasive techniques to treat varicose veins with heat.
- Venous surgery: procedure to remove or occlude large varicose veins (e.g. stripping or mini-phlebectomy).
- Wearing compression stockings or socks: Used to improve blood circulation and reduce symptoms.
- Lifestyle: advice on how to avoid aggravating disorders (physical exercise, elevating legs, avoiding prolonged standing).
Why consult a phlebologist?
- Symptoms: Leg heaviness, pain, swelling or visible veins.
- Prevention: If you have a family history of venous disease.
- Aesthetics: To treat unsightly veins.
